WELCOME TO RAASAY WALLED GARDEN
A Community Garden to Visit, Explore & Enjoy

Tucked away behind Raasay House, a short walk from the ferry terminal, Raasay Walled Garden is a welcoming, community-owned haven where history and new growth meet. Once part of the estate that supplied fresh produce to Raasay House, the garden fell silent for many years before being lovingly restored by local volunteers and paid gardeners. Today, it’s a vibrant space where residents grow food, share skills, and gather for events, while visitors can enjoy peaceful paths, beautiful planting, and a true taste of island life.

Whether you come to explore, relax, or connect with the community, the Walled Garden offers a warm Raasay welcome to all.

Raasay Walled Garden is cared for by a dedicated volunteer sub-committee of the Raasay House Community Company (RHCC). RHCC manages Raasay House, the Walled Garden, and a range of community policies on behalf of the island’s residents. A portion of the income generated from the rental of Raasay House is allocated to the garden, while all remaining funds are raised through garden sales, events, donations, and fundraising efforts.

At Raasay Walled Garden, we harvest seasonal vegetables, herbs and beautiful garden flowers grown right here in our walled garden. From crisp salad greens and colourful vegetables to freshly picked bouquets, everything on the stall is grown with care and picked for flavour, freshness and natural beauty.

Wednesday is our main harvest day, when the stall is usually at its fullest. During the peak growing season, we often add extra harvests, so there is always something new to discover.

Our stall works on a simple honesty system. You can pay by cash or card using the QR payment code, making it quick and easy to pick up what you need.

Whether you’re cooking dinner, looking for fresh ingredients or bringing home a bunch of flowers, our stall celebrates the best of the garden each week.

A FLORAL COLLABORATION

This season, the Walled Garden is blooming in collaboration with Kate of haven bread and wood — a Raasay resident, self-taught florist, woodworker, baker and true flower romantic.

With her instinctive eye and joyful, slightly wild style, Kate has lovingly chosen every bloom grown for picking this year.

She will be crafting our garden-fresh stems into her signature bouquets, each one a soft, warm expression of her unique creativity and skill.

It’s a celebration of local talent, slow beauty, and the quiet magic that happens when someone who genuinely loves flowers gets to shape a season in full colour.

HISTORY OF THE GARDEN

Explore the rich history of the Raasay Walled Garden through images, stories, and archives that trace its journey from historic estate garden to thriving community space.

PORTFOLIO 01 – HISTORY

PORTFOLIO-01 HISTORY is a detailed exploration of the Raasay Walled Garden, tracing its evolution from a productive estate garden to its eventual decline and later community ownership. It highlights what was grown within its sheltered walls, from fruit and vegetables to tender crops supported by the glasshouses. The guide also highlights the gardeners who worked there, their skills, and seasonal routines. It acknowledges the garden’s quieter years of neglect, offering context to its current restoration. Together, it provides a thoughtful and engaging insight into the garden’s past and ongoing story.

PORTFOLIO 02 – COMMUNITY

PORTFOLIO 02 – COMMUNITY documents the restoration of Raasay Walled Garden through the efforts of the local community. It charts the journey from an overgrown, underused space to a working garden shaped by volunteers and our part-time gardeners. The guide highlights community growing, workshops, and the gradual revival of the garden. It also looks ahead, outlining our plans including the restoration of the glasshouses, new indoor spaces, and improved accessibility. Together, it captures both the progress made and the long-term vision for a sustainable, community led garden.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The Walled Garden Team: Trevor, Simon, Dave & Hannah bring a wonderful blend of skills and enthusiasm to the garden.

Trevor adds his own creative flair, especially through the intricate designs he mows into lawns, while Simon contributes the gardening knowledge and is plot holder. Dave is also a plot holder and the Walled Garden’s RHCC representative. Hannah is happier behind the scenes when not weeding.

COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT PLOTS

Within the Walled Garden, there are eight community allotment plots, each cared for by local growers who bring their own ideas, skills, and crops to the space. Current plot holders include The Get Growing Group and 7 individuals, each contributing to the garden’s diversity.

These plots are places for people to grow food, experiment with different plants, and enjoy the process of tending the land through the seasons. Together they add colour, variety, and knowledge to the wider garden, showing how productive small growing spaces can be.

The allotments are an important part of the Walled Garden community, encouraging shared learning and a stronger connection to locally grown food.

If you are interested in having a plot in the future, please email us to join the waiting list, and we’ll be in touch if a space becomes available.
